The Department of Materials Science and
Engineering (DMSE) administers the Swagelok
Center for Surface Analysis of Materials
(SCSAM) at Case Western Reserve University
(CWRU). SCSAM is a multi-user analytical
facility providing instrumentation for
microstructural characterization of
materials as well as surface and
near-surface chemical analysis. The
facilities in SCSAM are available to all
users on campus at a Federally approved use
charge. The equipment described here is
maintained by six full-time engineers,
administered through DMSE.

The SCSAM
User Community: During the academic year
2008/2009, 274 individual researchers used
one or more of SCSAM's instruments. Of these,
220 were from Case Western Reserve
University. These users included students and
faculty from all seven Departments in the
Case School of Engineering, students and
faculty in the Departments of Physics,
Chemistry, Biology, and Geology in the
College of Arts and Sciences, and students
and faculty from various departments in the
School of Medicine and the School of Dental
Medicine. MatNet users (the Ohio Materials
Network) included students and faculty from
the University of Akron, Cleveland State
University, Kent State University, Oberlin
University, Ohio State University, and Ohio
University. Other academic users included
students and faculty from Carnegie Mellon
University, Michigan State University, the
University of California, Santa Barbara, the
University of Virginia, and the University of
Cambridge (England). SCSAM also hosted
researchers from the Cleveland Clinic
Foundation, NASA Glenn Research Center, and
the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Moreover,
33 industrial companies, the majority located
in Northern Ohio, utilized SCSAM
facilities. |
